Agriculture and Climate Change

The STF for Agriculture and Climate Change is looking for students interested in promoting agricultural and rural development through improved information and communication processes. The goal is to empower agriculture by using technological advancements, improving the knowledge, quality and application of agriculture and the environment in general. This creates a new paradigm called e-agriculture.

If you are a student interested in taking on a leadership role to help shape the Agriculture and Climate Change STF, please apply today by clicking the link to the right.

Digital Earth

The STF for Digital Earth is based on interaction with a virtual representation of the Earth as the interface to access digital information of various nature where GIS data, 3D models, web-based repositories, images, videos, and document repositories are associated to a geographical location. The concept of Digital Earth opens the door for geospatial information, via the Internet, to the broad public creating the conditions for a countless list of Web 2.0 applications. The aim is to provide better environmental analysis, and more generally improve our security and create new economic opportunities.

Students interested in taking leadership roles in this STF should apply today! Please fill out the form “Join an STF Application” on the right.

Future Cities

The current trends are pointing to the future in which the vast majority of the world’s population will live in cities. This brings a number of challenges such as city planning, urban mobility, pollutant emissions, high consumption of energy and more accidents. The STF for Future Cities aims to find students interested to investigate the ways in which information technology (ICT) can be used to address the major problems of growing cities.

If you are interested in applying for a leadership position, please follow the link to the right and apply now!

Future Internet Technologies

The main goal of the STF for Future Internet Technologies is to promote innovation-centric perspectives on the development and adoption of advanced solutions in the ICT domain among students. The focus is placed on activities related to Future Internet that are key enablers of a sustainable development in all industrial sectors.

Students should apply now for a leadership role in this STF if interested in helping to build the FIT STF and connect with other interested students in the field of FIT. Please fill out the form “Join an STF Application” on the right.

Green World

The STF for Green World involves students that are interested in environmental improvements aiming to benefit the health and economies of European communities and its citizens. Cleaner technologies are increasingly becoming the focus of many research initiatives in order to address future generation social challenges such as pollution, decrease of natural resources and climate change. The European Union is aggressively investing to meet carbon-reduction targets, boost energy security, and improve the economic sustainability and health of its communities.

If you are a student and are interested in pursuing a role in driving this Green World STF, apply now by clicking the link to the right!

Palla Harin – Communications Councilor

Palla Harin studied for his bachelors’ degree in electrical and electronics engineering in Vellore Institute of Technology.  He is currently pursuing his masters in electronics in POLITECNICO DI TORINO thanks to the INVEST YOUR TALENT IN ITALY scholarship which is sponsored by the Italian Chamber of Commerce.
He is interested in embedded systems  and prefers  practical rather than theoretical application. He has worked for six weeks in HINDUSTAN AERUNAUTICS LIMITED on automatic flight control.

Media

The Media STF brings together PhD students who focus on research and innovation in the field of immersive and distributed multimedia communications. The STF considers the following aspects of the media domain:
- Infrastructure for communication, computing and media;
- Interaction between people and media in the Future Internet;
- Effective processing of information;
- Linking the physical-sensed world and the virtual world;
- Applications of the Future Internet.

Interested students are encouraged to apply today for a leadership role in this STF by filling out the form “Join an STF Application” on the right.

Nanotechnology

The participants of the Nanotechnology STF are students and researchers from an array of technological fields including the automotive domain, avionics, industrial automation, mobile communications, telecommunications and medical systems. The common point of interest for this STF is research and innovation targeting development of new materials for numerous applications such as e-paper, polymer displays and organic light emitting diodes. The major topics of interest of this STF include integration and miniaturisation of chips, getting beyond the present limitations in manufacturing by using higher performance materials, non-silicon electronics and many others.

Students and researchers interested in taking on a leadership role in the Nanotechnology STF are encouraged to apply today by filling out the form “Join an STF Application” on the right.

Security and Safety

The e-Security and Safety STF serves as meeting place for students specializing in the security domain. The STF has two major sub-domains in its scope being the 1) Global Safety Communication and Information systems and 2) Information and Communication Systems and Networks Security. Participation in the STF will help students to identify the key challenges in science, research and development, business and policy making in the areas important to e-Security and Safety. The tasks of the STF also include providing input towards strategy and decision making, promotion and establishment of industry-research partnership collaboration programs and transfer of scientific results in the field of information and communication security into the economy.

Students interested in taking on a leadership role to help drive this STF are encouraged to apply by clicking the appropriate link on the right.

4Peace

The mission of the STF 4Peace is a meeting place for students with an ICT background and interest to direct their research to building a more balanced and peaceful world. ICT offers unique possibilities in this area as it facilitates communication between people around the globe, thus strengthening multi-cultural awareness and intensifying cross-border cooperation and exchange of ideas. The STF 4Peace identifies numerous challenges to be addressed, including closer involvement of the decision-making parties into the process in order to support investment initiatives in underrepresented regions of the world, finding ways to turn ICT projects into an empowerment force for socio-economic communities, promotion of socio-economic cooperation and development of a peace agenda to call for political changes.

Students interested in taking a leadership role in order to drive this STF 4Peace into fruition are encouraged to apply today by clicking the appropriate link to the right.

Cloud Computing for People

Data mining is the main impetus for the paradigm shift in the manner we conceptualize our surroundings. Modern society extensively depends on models of physical and technical phenomena, which has a predictive power that aids to forecast different issues. The gigantic dataset that has become available explores entirely new methods to realize and model data by using the algorithms. Conjugation of efficient algorithms and statistical properties of data can produce significant contribution in the domain of data mining and implementation of the concept in cloud computing platform would help in addressing several challenging issues.
From the application point of view, it might have several possibilities like Weather forecasting system where a huge amount of distributed data viz. the processed output of the satellite images are to be to be used to make a predictive system. Another application might be financial systems of a country. Thus cloud computing can be deployed for the benefit of the society and its people.

Technical topics:

  • Cloud Computing
  • Parallel algorithms
  • Data mining
  • Stochastic process
  • Pattern recognition
  • Data modelling

To apply for a position in this STF, please fill out the form “Join an STF Application” on the right.

Shubhabrata Roy – Chair

I did my undergraduate study in Jadavpur University, India. After having some indutrial exposure I decided to pursue higher studies. I got an opportunity to pursue my MS in Communication and Network in Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna di Studi Universitari e di Perfezionamento (SSSUP) in Pisa, Italy; fully funded by Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Currently I am working at the Ericsson Reseach Lab in Italy on Next Generation IP over WDM Network as my masters thesis. I wish to pursue a career in Research and Development with an humanitarian point of view.
