SAT – Interdisciplinary Telecommunications

This SAT deals with the interface of electrical engineering, computer science, governmental policy and regulation, managerial network planning, and related aspects of wireless and wired telecommunication systems. This SAT does not focus on the technical design aspects, but on their implementation in technological solutions for telecommunication networks from the viewpoint of service providers and customers.

J. P. Shim

J. P. Shim - Vice Chair

Professor Dr. J. P. Shim, John Grisham Faculty Excellence recipient, is Professor of MIS and Director of the International Business Strategy Program at Mississippi State University. He received his Ph.D. from University of Nebraska, MBA from Seoul National University, and completed the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program. Professor Shim won MSU's prestigious 2006 Ralph E. Powe Research Excellence Award and received numerous grants and awards, including NSF, DOE, Microsoft, Booz-Allen and Hamilton, U.S. EPA, Mississippi Institution of Higher Learning, Korea Sanhak (school-industry) Foundation, and is a eight-time recipient of outstanding faculty awards. Professor Shim has authored and co-authored over 150 research articles, including Communications of the ACM, IEEE, Journal of AIS, Decision Support Systems, Interfaces, CAIS, Computers and Operations Research, Journal of the Operational Research, and other leading journals. He consulted with Booz-Allen and Hamilton, EPA, and several other ICT companies. He was a keynote speaker at International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing, a frequent speaker at companies and universities in 15 different countries. He currently serves as Senior Editor and Editorial Board Member for numerous journals. His current research interests are DMB, wireless telecommunications, DSS, podcasting, and blog.

Jan Holub

Jan Holub - Industry Chair

Associate Professor

Assoc. Prof. Ing. Jan Holub, Ph.D. graduated from the Czech Technical University in 1996. He made his Ph.D. in 1999 (Thesis: Methods for Linearization of Transfer Characteristics by means of Dither Signals) and defended the position of Associate Professor at Faculty of Electrical Engineering of CTU (Habilitation Thesis: New Methods for Objective Voice Transmission Quality Measurements and Their Applications). His research interests include AD and DA converters, digital signal processing, speech coding and processing, psychoacoustics and measurements in telecommunication networks. He is an author of 16 articles in scientific magazines and more than 90 contributions for conferences (over 70% international). He is a member of several scientific organizations and committees like IEE (since 2004), ISCA (since 2002), IMEKO (since 2004), Wireless Telecommunication Symposia (since 2005).

Qing-An Zeng

Qing-An Zeng - Publications Chair

Qing-An Zeng is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at University of Cincinnati, USA and the Director of Wireless & Mobile Networking Laboratory (WMN Lab) at University of Cincinnati. Dr. Zeng holds both MS and PhD degrees in EE from Shizuoka University in Japan. In 1997, he joined NEC Corporation, Japan, where he was engaged in the R&D of 3G systems. In 1999, he joined the Department of ECECS at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Zeng has been working on the areas of wireless and mobile networking for more than 20 years and has published more than 100 referred international journals and conferences articles. He is also a co-author of the book titled "Introduction to Wireless and Mobile Systems (2nd edition)" published by Thomson in 2005. His research interests include Wireless and Mobile Networks, Handoff and Resource assignment, Mobility Management, Heterogeneous Networks, Mesh Networks, Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Wireless Sensor Networks, Wireless Internet, QoS Issues in Communication Networks, Security in Wireless Networks, UWB (Ultra-wideband), NoC (Network on Chip), Modeling and Performance Analysis, Queuing Theory, He is a senior member of IEEE.

Steve Powell

Steve Powell - Committee Chair

California Polytechnic University - Pomona Steven R. Powell is a Professor in the Computer Information Systems Department at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He serves as the department's Telecommunications Program Coordinator and has led the university's efforts in interdisciplinary telecommunications education and research. He is the Founder and General Chair of the Wireless Telecommunications Symposium, a leading interdisciplinary mobile communications and wireless networking conference supported by the IEEE Communications Society, ACM SIGMOBILE, and the INFORMS Telecommunications Section. Dr. Powell has taught telecommunications, engineering management, electrical engineering, IS, and computer science courses at the California State Polytechnic University - Pomona, Claremont Graduate University, Long Island University – C.W. Post Campus, and University of Southern California. His industrial experience includes positions as Director of Corporate Planning at American Express Company and Member of the Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories. He is active in the IEEE Communications Society, having organized and now chairing the Society's Foothill Chapter, the INFORMS Technical Section on Telecommunications, and the MIT Educational Council. Dr. Powell's research interests are primarily in the areas of telecommunications management, telecommunications strategy, international telecommunications, and network security and control. His work has been published in academic as well as practitioner journals and books, including the IS Audit and Control Journal, the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, the International Engineering Consortium's Annual Review of Communications, and Auerbach Publications' collection of IT books. He holds an M.B.A. from Columbia University's Graduate School of Business, a Ph.D. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California, and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
