SAT – Social Informatics

The activities are related to the interaction between modern society and ICT (information-communication technology) in the broadest sense.

1. interaction between society and ICT, i.e. social aspects of computerization, what can be observed at two levels:

  • information society (interaction macro/society level)
  • human computer interaction (interaction at micro/personal level)
  • organizational informatics, community informatics (interaction at mezzo/organizational level)

2. use of ICT as tool for studying social phenomena:

  • computer assisted data collection,
  • computer tools for analysing social data (social networks, data mining)
  • cyber-infrastructure for social science research,
  • e-social sciences;

3. applications of ICT in social sciences and humanities:

  • modeling in social sciences
  • design of information systems (users and organizational aspects)
  • applications in public sector: e-government, e-health, e-learning
  • information architecture
  • library sciences
  • ICT applications in arts and humanists (language, music).

Vasja Vehovar

Vasja Vehovar - Committee Chair

Vasja Vehovar (1958), PhD is a full professor of Statistics at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. He teaches courses on Sampling, Survey methodology and Information Society. His research interests span from survey methodology to issues of information society. From 1996 he is the principal investigator of the national project RIS (Research on Internet in Slovenia, http://ris.org), the leading source for information society research in Slovenia. He is also involved in various EU information society research projects. He is developing the WebSM portal (http://websm.org) devoted to web survey methodology and he was also coordinating the corresponding EU framework project. He started with Slovenian national nodes for Safer Internet and Inhope network, http://safe.si and http://spletno-oko.si. For operational purposes he developed specialized academic Content Management System (http://OneClickCMS.net).
